She received 7 years’ penal servitude in 1852 for breaking into a shop in Saltcoats, and since then has had short terms of imprisonment.
Obviously wanted to get sent back to Australia.

"On enquiry at the pawn office it was found that two new aprons and a pair of trousers had been pledged. These goods were identified by local shopkeepers as having been stolen."

So where was the pawn shop in Saltcoats? and perhaps who had it.?

With regard to "who had it," previous court cases in the 1800s referred to THOMAS BYRNE (1869 and 1871) and PATRICK TAIT (1898).

SATURDAY 22nd JUNE 1968

Saltcoats Vics went down by 2-0 to Rutherglen Glencairn in a friendly match at Campbell Park last Saturday. Glens had several trialists out and were just that little bit sharper than Vics.

Saltcoats had keeper McGregor, of Johnston Burgh, out on trial and he was signed immediately after the match. They have also re-signed left-half Sweeney.

Winton Rovers meet Saltcoats in a friendly match at Campbell Park tomorrow ( Saturday ). The kick-off is at 3 pm.

SC,

I'm sure you will know but for the benefit of others, the reference on the post card to "Lavery's attic" undoubtedly has a connection with this previous post:-

GLASGOW HERALD
19 JULY 1983

JOHN LAVERY

If you can take the vivid emerald green background wall covering - it's a gem of an exhibition.

John Lavery was a leading member of the Glasgow Boys who, along with Hornel, Guthrie and company revolutionised Scottish painting in the 1880s. Though born in Belfast and rising to be a successful society portrait painter in London, his best and interesting works were produced in Scotland and "Lavery: the Eary Career 1880-1895" investigates the era in detail.

Many of the 26 pictures highlight Lavery’s concern with the Whistlerian aesthetics of arrangement of form and colour combined with decorative qualities. Incidentally, the fact that Glasgow possesses an abundance of Whistler painting is an indirect result of Lavery’s admiration and efforts on behalf of Whistler.

Other influences range from early John Pettie anecdotalism via Bastian Lepage, Degas Japanism to later in life, Sarjent (here very obvious in the fluid of the 1895 portrait of Mary Burrell, William Burrell's sister. However, Lavery was his own man as delectable works as "A Tennis Rally", "Summer Day Grez" and "Woman Painting a Pot" demonstrate. Aesthetics apart many will find pictures like "Paisley Lawn Tennis Club 1889", despite its heavy handed blossom tree) and "Glasgow International Exhibition 1888" of great interest.

Lavery was above all an elegant painter. His feather-light touch and refined sense of colour earned him a significant international reputation which resulted in artistic honours and a knighthood. By the end of his long life he had come quite a way from the orphaned boy sent to stay with his pawnbroker cousin in Saltcoats.

GLASGOW HERALD
25 JUNE 1887

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

At a special meeting on Thursday night – Provost McIsaac presiding – a letter was read from Mr Kirkhope, procurator-fiscal, declining to accept a salary of £20 a year. He would be happy to continue in office at a proper salary.

At a previous meeting the Commissioners had increased Mr Kirkhope’s salary from £15 to £20.

Mr Kirkhope also wrote intimating that he had returned the police reports to Inspector Smith.

It was agreed to regard Mr Kirkhope’s letter as his resignation of the office of procurator-fiscal.

The magistrates afterwards appointed Mr James Gray, writer, Ardrossan, to be procurator-fiscal.
