VESSEL ASHORE

During the high wind on Saturday morning last, the barque BELHAVEN of Greenock, was caught in a squall off Pladda. The vessel was instantly put before the wind and every exertion made to reef the sails, which the crew were unable to manage owing to the severity of the gale.

While boating about, not knowing exactly in what direction they were steering, they mistook the light at Saltcoats for that on the Cumbraes. Running closer to the shore to avoid these islands, the captain became aware of his mistake; and in an attempt to put the ship about, her sails were torn to ribbons.

She was very shortly afterwards driven aground upon the sands, about a quarter of a mile from Saltcoats.
