TRIAL OF A JOURNALIST FOR FORGERY

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, before Sheriff Hall and a jury, DAVID HUNTER, otherwise GRAEME HUNTER, describing himself as a journalist, Glasgow, was charged with having, on the 16th July last, forged the name of John McKenzie, 423 Argyll Street, Glasgow, to a letter of guarantee for £3, for the payment of the rent of Alma Cottage, Saltcoats, and on the 18th July, uttered the same to John Boyd, bed manufacturer, Warwick Street, Glasgow, as security, Hunter having taken the home from Boyd.

It was afterwards ascertained that John McKenzie, of the above address, had died some years prior to the date of the letter.

In November last Hunter was brought up on this charge, and liberated on bail of £10 for his appearance at a second diet, but failed to appear, and the bail was forfeited.

Recently he was again apprehended in Glasgow. He pleaded not guilty, and the case went to trial. Mr H. Montgomery, solicitor, Ayr, conducting the defence.

The jury by a majority, returned a verdict of guilty, and Hunter was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment.

ARDROSSAN AND SALTCOATS HERALD

SALTCOATS TOWN COUNCIL

Saltcoats Town Council are making use of government grants to improve a number of council houses in the town.

A report submitted by the housing factor says that there are 796 pre-war houses in the town , 386 of which do not have a wash hand basin. the council have already received permission to renovate 50 bungalows at James Miller Crescent. The cost of the work in each house will amount to £320, of which £274 will qualify for a grant. Similar improvements will be made to a further 236 houses.

Bailie Dr D White said that as some of the older houses became vacant over a number of years the council had carried out improvements in some cases. However , where one family had occupied a house for a long time nothing had been done. This was one of the reasons why the council had set out on a fairly ambitious scheme.

Tresurer R Lambie said some of the improvements could be carried out while the houses were occupied. With other work they would need to see how long it took and if there were repercussions from the tenants. It might be necessary to move tenants out to have the work completed.

In reply to Dr White, Treasurer Lambie said the council hoped that " before we go out in two years' time " all the houses would have been improved.

Saltcoats Town Council have accepted an offer for the erection of 95 houses at Laighdykes.

The council are also awaiting tenders for 39 houses in the Parkend Road - Raise Street area and houses have been demolished to clear the site.

Saltcoats Town Council are to make representations to Ayr County Council and to Sir Fitzroy Maclean, Bt, MP, to have a crossing for pedestrians on the High Road now that the speed limit has been raised to 40 mph.

Asking the council to take this action Bailie Mrs Lambie pointed out that there were now over 6000 people living above the High Road.

Bailie Dr David White has given notice to Saltcoats Town Council that the council consider instituting annual lectures in memory of the late Lord Boyd-Orr, Freeman of the Burgh of Saltcoats.

Saltcoats Town Council have told the county planning officer that they object to an application to change premises at 36 Argyle Road from cafe to licensed premises.
