SALTCOATS RENT REBATE AND FIRE SERVICES

Saltcoats Town Council last night had under consideration a recommendation by the Finance Committee that the Housing Rent Rebates Regulations (1937) and the regulations made by the Department of Health should be adopted as from September 1. After discussion it as agreed, on the motion of Bailie Adams, that the matter be remitted to the Finance Committee for further consideration and to report to the Council at a special meeting. It was intimated that Ardrossan Town Council had stated that the clause in the agreement dealing with Ardrossan Fire Brigade services to Saltcoats, which authorised the withdrawal of the brigade from a fire in Saltcoats required in Ardrossan, was no longer in operation. Ardrossan asked for a further meeting with Saltcoats to resume consideration of the brigade services, including organisation in time of national emergency. The Council expressed satisfaction at the withdrawal of the clause, and arranged for a further meeting.

SALTCOATS HOUSING PROJECT ABANDONED

At the monthly meeting of Saltcoats Town Council last night – Provost Millar presiding – it was reported that offers had been received for the erection of houses in Jack’s Road, Raise Street, and the public park.

The offers were higher than the estimated cost, for their report showed that the rents required for the houses would be: -

£37 for a four-apartment cottage and £32 for a three-apartment flat in Jack’s Road;
£30 for a three-apartment flat and £22 10s for a two-apartment flat in Raise Street;
£30 for a three-apartment flat and £24 10s for a two-apartment flat in the public park.

In view of the rents which would be required to be charged, and that these houses would not take the place of any which the Council might demolish for the clearance of insanitary areas, the Council decided meantime to abandon the project of erecting the houses.

STREET PILLAR COMMUNICATION

Brigadier-General R M Dungeon, His Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland and civic representatives of Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston attended the inauguration of the pillar system of communication in Saltcoats Police Station yesterday. Seventeen pillars have been erected in the three towns in direct communication with Saltcoats Police Station. There are two methods of communication on each pillar – once for the public and the other for the police. There is also a light on each pillar which can be flashed to call a policeman on the beat. Brigadier-General Dungeon emphasised that the value of the system lay in the cooperation of the public with the police and he said that in Glasgow last year, an enormous amount of valuable information had been given to the police by the public using the phones. Chief Constable Munro, Ayrshire, said that this was the beginning of a system which would link up the whole of Ayrshire.

THE FAIR HOLIDAYS – SALTCOATS

At no former time was there so large a number of visitors in the town as on Saturday, and many were unable to obtain the necessary accommodation. The weather was fine, and the holiday-makers spent the time agreeably at the shore, strolling about, boating and bathing.

About seven o’clock in the evening the weather changed. There were several peals of thunder, after which rain fell.
