THE LATE DR. SCOTT, SALTCOATS, AS A PRESBYTER

By the death of the Rev. Dr. Scott, writes our Ardrossan correspondent, Ardrossan Free Presbytery has lost a valuable mentor.

Dr. Scott was a member of the Irvine Free Presbytery for many years, and he was one of those who were mainly instrumental in the formation of the Ardrossan Presbytery. When the Assembly was given its assent to the constitution of the latter he superintended the equipment of the Presbytery Hall (at Ardrossan Free Church), and succeeded in gathering from various sources a full set of records of the Assembly from the Disruption, which forms the nucleus of the Presbytery library.

He took an active and prominent part in all the affairs falling under consideration. As moderator, he conducted the meetings in a manner which won the hearty respect of his co-Presbyters.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

The offer of Alexander Gardiner to do the work of cleansing was accepted.

A letter was read from the solicitor to the Inland Revenue giving some facts in connection with a claim on the town of £4 10s 5d of yearly burgh cess, and stating that the Commissioners seemed to be the partner, as representing the inhabitants, who might be looked to to convene a public meeting with a view of voluntary delivery of a cess roll, failing which application must be made to the Court of Exchequer.

It was reported that the paving of Countess Street was now completed. The subscriptions and grants amounted to £183, which about covered the cost of the work.

AYRSHIRE HOSPITAL PROBLEM

The Scottish Board of Health have made a suggestion to the local authorities within the Northern District Committee of Ayrshire that they should co-operate to secure the most economical use of the infectious disease hospital accommodation in the district by setting aside each hospital for the treatment of one particular infectious disease only.

Saltcoats Town Council have expressed themselves as unfavourable to the proposal on the ground that visitation of patients by relatives would be rendered most inconvenient and in some cases practically impossible owing to the distance certain hospitals would be from the residence of patients.
