SMART SENTENCE FOR WIFE ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, WILLIAM MURRAY, fish dealer, Quay Street, Saltcoats, was charged with having on the 6th instant, assaulted Mary Keenan or Murray, his wife, by seizing hold of her by the hair of the head, dragging her about, and striking her repeatedly with his clenched fists.

He pleaded guilty.

The Fiscal stated that Murray had gone home the worse of liquor, and started to smash the furniture and throw articles about the house. His wife remonstrated with him in a gentle manner, whereupon he chased her out of the house and committed the assault in the street.

Murray had threatened to take his wife’s life, and on several occasions had slept with a razor under his pillow.

There were eight previous convictions against him, four of which were for assault upon his wife.

The Sheriff sentenced him to 60 days’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Sir,

SALTCOATS – G. & S.W. RAILWAY STATION

Some years ago the Glasgow & South-Western Railway Company erected handsome and commodious premises at Saltcoats Station, and made provision for verandahs, but unfortunately the verandahs have never been erected.

I am quite at a loss to understand why they should have been so much delay in the erection of these, because large passenger traffic at this station must yield a very handsome return, and certainly deserves better treatment.

The waiting-rooms, although commodious, are not equal to the crowds that collect on the platform, who in wet and stormy weather are left to the tender mercy of the elements.

I understand some extensive alterations are about to take place at the goods shed, and I hope at the same time the directors will complete the passenger platform.

I am &c
ONWARD.
