ASSAULT

At Saltcoats Police Court yesterday – before Provost Donaldson – JAMES McCALLUM, carter, Windmill Street, was charged with assaulting a traveller in Hamilton Street. He pleaded not guilty.

From the evidence it appeared that McCallum had agreed to take the traveller from Ardrossan to Saltcoats in his waggonette for sixpence. At Saltcoats the other passengers tendered twopence each to McCallum and the traveller offered to pay the same, with the result that he was assaulted.

McCallum was convicted, and fined £1 or fourteen days’ imprisonment.

TO APPEAR IN LONDON
ENGAGEMENT FOR ARDROSSAN AND SALTCOATS PLAYERS

Sir Nigel Playfair, of the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, has arranged with the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Players, who last year won the Amateur Dramatic Championship of Britain and America, to present at the Lyric Theatre, their winning play “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals” as a companion piece to the Stevenson-Henley play, “Beau Austin.”

The Players will open their engagement on Monday, November 18, and they will have a minimum of two weeks, with possibly an extension to five weeks.

St James Barrie’s generosity in the matter of royalties has been a considerable assistance in making arrangements possible. Sir Nigel Playfair was one of the adjudicators who awarded the Drama Festival trophy to the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Players last year in London.

There is also a possibility of other plays in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Players’ repertoire being presented under Sir Nigel’s management later on.

A SALTCOATS GOLDEN WEDDING

Provost and Mrs Donaldson, Saltcoats, celebrated their golden wedding in the E.U. Congregational Church Hall yesterday afternoon, when there was a large gathering of relatives and friends.

Provost Donaldson is a native of Irvine, and his wife, Elizabeth Wallace, who is a sister of the late Mr Andrew Wallace, inspector of poor, Govan, belongs to Leslie.

On October 19, 1858, they were married in Eglinton Street, Glasgow, at the residence of the bride, by Rev. Doctor Morrison.

Mr Donaldson was a stationmaster on the Glasgow and South-Western Railway for 43 years at Dalmellington, Paisley, Abercorn, and Stevenston. For 31 years he was at Stevenston, and during that time took an active interest in the church, temperance, and educational affairs. For nine years he was chairman of the School Board. He founded the Ardeer Sabbath School, which ultimately became merged with the United Presbyterian Mission Church.

On his retirement from the railway he removed to Saltcoats, where he has lived for 12 years. He became interested in municipal matters, was elected a councillor, then bailie, and two years ago was appointed Provost. He is a very popular chairman with his colleagues. He is a member of Saltcoats E.U. Church, and on many occasions has officiated in the pulpit there and elsewhere.

At the dinner yesterday afternoon the Provost was presented with a gold-mounted umbrella and purse of sovereigns and Mrs Donaldson with a diamond ring from members of the family.

The E.U. congregation have a meeting on Wednesday night, when an illuminated address and silver tea service will be presented.

They have five of a family – three sons and two daughters – all of whom are now married. There are 23 grandchildren.

COMPENSATION FOR SHEEP WORRYING

Sheriff Paterson at a Small Debt Court in Irvine on Saturday disposed of an action raised by JOHN KIRKWOOD, flesher, Saltcoats, against John Porteous, Ravenspark, Irvine, in which compensation was claimed on account of damage done to a flock of sheep, the property of the pursuer, by a dog belonging to the defender.

The Sheriff found that two of the sheep had been worried by the defender’s dog, and damage to the extent of £1 done in each instance. The damage to the flock he also assessed at £1, and gave decree for £3 in all and expenses.

A DENTISTY DISPUTE

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday Sheriff Mackenzie gave decision in an action at the instance of A. Waterhouse, surgeon dentist, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, against SAMUEL ROBERTSON CROSBIE, Saltcoats, for £100 as a penalty for alleged breach of agreement under apprenticeship in the pursuer’s service.

It appears that some time after entering upon indenture of apprenticeship the defender made an agreement with pursuer, whereby he was allowed to attend classes for his first professional examination. There he attended and having passed, he entered into another agreement, under which he was allowed to attend classes for his second professional examination. He attended part of these, but it was found by a new regulation he required to attend a course of anatomy, extending over 10 months, and the pursuer refused to allow him to do so, whereupon he left the pursuer’s service.

The Sheriff is of the opinion that in entering into such an agreement the pursuer was put upon his inquiry as to the meaning of the permission which he granted to the defender, and that, having omitted to specify any period of time, he must be held to such a period as the circumstances plainly dictate.

His Lordship holds that the pursuer has not carried out that agreement, and has no title to demand payment of the penalty sued for. He therefore assoilzies the defender, but as he thinks blame attaches to both sides for the misunderstanding which has arisen, he grants no expenses.
