SATURDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 1975

From the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald :

LARGS THISTLE 1, SALTCOATS VICTORIA 1

A revitalised Saltcoats Victoria stretched Largs to the full at Barrfields on Saturday and fully merited a share of the points. It was not a match to enthuse over on a cold winter's day but it was always interesting and the result was in doubt right to the very end.

The first corner fell to Largs but it was effectively cleared. Keeping up the pressure Thistle took the lead in the 15th minute when Brian McGoldrick flashed the ball past Robertson.

A powerful drive from Adam Cairns brought out the best in Harkness as Vics fought back. Both teams were stepping up the tempo but the forward lines were repulsed by sound defence with both goalkeepers in top form.

Early in the second half Saltcoats were back on level terms when Cains scored with a well-hit shot. Saltcoats were playing with tremendous fighting spirit and pummeled the Largs defence with long, searching balls and strong running.

It was all Vics in the closing 10 minutes but they couldn't find the net. Largs undoubtedly have problems at the moment while Saltcoats can take great encouragement from their performance.

Largs - Harkness; Glover, M McDonald; J McDonald, Arthur, McBride, Liddell, Fraser, Griffen, McGoldrick and Valerio. Subs, Mackay and McKinley.

Saltcoats - Robertson; Moran, Lunan; Young, Jamieson, Cairns, Reid, Harkins; Diamond, Flynn and Mauchlem. Subs, McCutcheon and Seenan.

SALTCOATS AND HIGH RENTS

At the monthly meeting of Saltcoats Town Council, Councillor W. D. Kerr moved that the Council ask the Government to take the necessary steps to prevent rents being increased during the war.

The motion was not seconded.

At the same meeting it was agreed to support a resolution framed by Falkirk Town Council protesting against the increased prices of foodstuffs, etc., and calling upon the Government to regulate the prices of these commodities.

SALTCOATS – BODIES FOUND IN THE HARBOUR

The bodies of the two crew of the smack HELEN AND JANE, of Stranraer, which were drowned in the harbour here, about seven weeks ago, have been found.

The one, GEORGE LIVINGSTONE, the master, principal support of an aged widowed mother, a sister, and sister’s orphan child, was got about a fortnight ago; that of the other, WILLIAM THOMSON, on Saturday last, by some parties gathering seaweed near the harbour.

They were both respectably interred in Stevenston churchyard.

They were natives of Stranraer.

SALTCOATS PROTEST AGAINST DRAINAGE PLAN

A protest is to be made by Saltcoats Town Council in connection with the proposed Garnock Valley drainage scheme.

An outfall for the discharge of sewage is to be constructed a quarter of a mile beyond the low water mark at a point on the beach in Stevenston.

There is also an indication that Paisley sewage may be taken into the same sewer.

In view of the possibility of shore pollution at Sandylands Promenade and the East Shore, which provides bathing and other recreational facilities, the Council view the proposal with grave concern.

AYRSHIRE BURGHS’ HOUSING PROTEST

Another injustice to Scotland was how Bailie Gourlay, Saltcoats, characterised the allocation of 8000 fewer houses to Scotland that were in hand at the present time, when he directed attention to this anomaly at a meeting of the Ayrshire Burghs Association held in Ayr yesterday.

In the 11 Regions of England the numbers shown were in excess of the houses at present being constructed.

It was a shame that the allocation of labour and material to Scotland should be so low.

The meeting agreed that the point should be brought to the notice of the Convention of Royal Burghs.

SALTCOATS TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

Bailie Arnott presided.

A recommendation of the Shores Committee that the arrangements of last season for conducting the kiosk, bathing places at the east and west shores, stances for donkeys, and boat-hiring be continued during the ensuing season was agreed to.

Applications from minstrel and other entertainers were continued till next meeting.

A discussion took place as to whether stalls for the sale of sweets and light refreshments on the shore be allowed this year.

The committee recommended that they not be allowed, and Mr Hunter, seconded by Mr McKirdy, moved the adoption of the recommendation. Mr Bogle, seconded by Judge Miller, moved that the stalls be let on the shore as formerly.

On a vote being taken the recommendation was adopted.

The motion of which Mr Bogle gave notice at last meeting regarding the housing of the working classes by the erection of a model lodging-house in the town came up, but did not find a seconder, and was allowed to drop.

THE EGLINTON HUNT

The meet on Monday was held at Knockrivoch, at the farm near the storm-bent little wood at the end of the hills above Saltcoats and Ardrossan.

While the hounds and horses were making their way to the meet across the lower land snow was falling, but was not lying.

Up here among the hills above the sea it was found to be very wintry, all the moorland hills and the fields below them being white as far as could be seen through the whirling snowstorm.

It was found to be impossible to hunt, so, after sheltering in the farm for some time the small field dispersed.
