REFRESHMENT SHOP BY-LAWS

Sheriff Principal Lyon Mackenzie heard agents in connection with the application by the Town Councils of Kilmarnock, Largs, Ardrossan, and Saltcoats for the approval of by-laws for the regulation of places of public refreshment in those burghs.

Mr Joseph Kirkland, solicitor, opposing the by-laws for Saltcoats, pointed out that there were no licensed hotels in that burgh, and that the result of the by-laws would be that no visitor on a Sunday would be able to obtain refreshment.

Mr Hastings, solicitor, Ardrossan, said that in that burgh if the by-laws were confirmed the only available temperance refreshment for visitors would be three public fountains, at which the Town Council did not even provide drinking cups (Laughter).

The Sheriff Principal adjourned the applications for the purpose of an inquiry into all the local circumstances to be held at Ayr.

AT THE CINEMAS

REGAL

Image

Troy Donahue and Connie Stevens co-star in " Palm Springs Weekend ", showing on Sunday. " The Sound of Music " , the film version of one of the most popular stage musicals of recent times, is still attracting large audiences. Tuneful and heartwarming, it is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp family singers, one of the world's top concert groups during the period immediately before the Second World War. The film company utilised Frohnburg Castle near Salzburg to " stand in " for the Von Trapp villa. The real Von Trapp family home was occupied by Gestapo chief Himmler during the last war. The high wall he had built to protect him from his millions of enemies remains and it made an otherwise delightful house very unphotogenic.

LA SCALA

Paul Newman heads the cast of a Western, " Hombre ", which begins a week's run on Monday. It concerns a young man who , as a child, was carried off by Apache Indians and raised by one of their chiefs. Later a white man found him, took him to his home and tried to give him a place in white society. But Hombre ran away and grew up an Apache in appearance and in philosophy. The film opens in a small Arizona town with Hombre being persuaded to take over a boarding house which has been left to him in a will. But he decides to sell the boarding house and make his way south to buy a herd of horses.

COUNTESS

Image

A delightful Walt Disney cartoon, " The Lady and the Tramp " starts a week's run on Monday. Lady is a pedigree spaniel owned by two newlyweds who live in the best part of an American town. She tells three canine friend that her owners are expecting a baby and that she is being neglected. Then a cheeky mongrel, called The Tramp, gatecrashes the company and suggests to Lady that once the baby arrives, she should move out. Eventually Lady is forced to leave when two Siamese cats are brought into the household, and she and The Tramp join forces. Completing the programme is " Texas John Slaughter " ( Tom Tryon ) .

ASSAULT AND THEFT CASES

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, JAMES PETTIGREW, seaman, Ardrossan, was charged with having assaulted his wife and his mother, and also maliciously broken a chair in the house of the latter, Springvale Street, Saltcoats, on the 7th instant. He pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment.

ALEXANDER THOMSON, a fireman, residing in Springvale Place, Saltcoats, was charged with having, in the public house of Joseph Stroud, corner of Bradshaw Street and Hill Street, Saltcoats, on 7th instant, assault Stroud, his wife, and John Adam, a house agent, from Glasgow, and also with having stolen Adam’s watch and chain. Accused pleaded guilty.

It appeared he had restored the watch and chain immediately after having taken them from Adam.

The Sheriff said as thefts seem not to have been committed with any felonious intent, he felt justified in inflicting the lenient penalty of a fine of £3, with the alternative of 30 days’ imprisonment.

SALTCOATS BOY WINS WEST CUP

Ardrossan Academy pupil David Stratton won the West of Scotland boys' golf championship on Saturday ( 10th July ) . The 15-year-old Saltcoats boy defeated Ian MacLeod of Camphill High School by 4 and 3 in the final.

Stratton was out in 37 - one over par - to MacLeod's 38, and one up, and he had two birdies and a bogey on the five inward holes he had to play out.

He became two up when MacLeod was short at the fourth and missed the fifth green. the margin was cut at the sixth where MacLeod holed from three yards and Stratton missed from one.

They had birdie about at the next two, Stratton holing from 12 feet at the seventh and MacLeod reaching the back of the green in two fine shots at the 476-yard eighth.

A seven-yard put for a birdie at the tenth made the Saltcoats boy again two up and there he stayed until the fourteenth, which MacLeod conceded after his drive had broken into the ditch and his third had gone out of bounds.

At the fifteenth Stratton celebrated a lucky bounce from the bank of a bunker by holing a nine-yarder for a birdie and the championship.

Stratton's principal achievement probably was his one-hole semi-final win over Angus Mackay ( Lanark Grammar School ) , runner-up for the Scottish boys' championship and strong favourite for this tournament.

Golf seems to play a pretty prominent part in the spare time of the Strattons. Not only is 15-year-old David a promising player but his 13-year-old brother Ian has also enjoyed success in this highly competitive sport.

In addition to the West of Scotland Cup, the Girvan Boys' Trophy and the senior golf trophy of Ardrossan Academy which David has won the Strattons' home is also decorated with Ian's two trophies - The Ardrossan Academy Junior Championship trophy and the award for the under 14 section of the Girvan tourney.

Although Ian was too young to enter for the West of Scotland he caddied for his brother throughout the competition and is to enter himself next year. At present Ian plays off 10 while his brother is a two handicap player.

After last week's success David is preparing for the Dalmahoy Boys' Tournament which takes place next Tuesday. As part of his training he plays two rounds a day at his club - West Kilbride. He now has an eye on the Scottish Boys' 72 hole stroke play event at Lanark and the British Boys' Championship at Barassie next month with hopes of adding further silverware to his growing collection.

A measure of David's ability is that in the eight rounds he played to win the West last week he was only eight over par.
