BOY OF FOUR DROWNED IN SCHOOL POOL

A four-year-old boy, ROBERT GEMMELL, of 1 Cunninghame Road, Saltcoats, was drowned last night in a new swimming pool which is still under test at Auchenharvie Academy, Saltcoats.

He went to the pool with two older boys to play and apparently wandered off on his own. The other boys heard a scream and a splash and found Robert Struggling in the deep end of the pool. They tried unsuccessfully to throw a rope to him.

Eventually police, alerted by the watchman, brought the unconscious boy from the water. He died before reaching hospital.

Workmen filled the pool recently to test its joints, and it was to have been emptied again this week.
