THE STORM – SALTCOATS

At Saltcoats the damage was done for the most part confined to dwelling-houses, and nearly every one of these in the town suffered less or more.

At the East U.P. Manse a large chimney fell through the roof into the study, doing a great deal of damage.

In several other streets in the town chimneys were blown down, and the roofs of houses greatly injured. Stones, slates, chimney cans, and thatch were strewn about the streets.

So great was the force of the gale that many houses were shaken, to the great alarm of the inmates, who in some cases sought shelter with neighbours till the gale had somewhat abated.

At the harbour little damage was sustained, the boats being securely moored. One small boat was sunk, and a fishing boat hauled up on the beach was blown over and damaged.

Fishermen who were watching their boats at the quay describe the gale as one of exception severity.

Large numbers of herring boxes were packed on the quay, and some were blown about in all directions, greatly to the danger of those persons who were moving about.

A boundary wall at a new property in Springvale Street was levelled, as were also several hoardings and fences in various parts of the town.

The thatched houses suffered severely, being in many cases stripped and the ridges torn off.

THE LIGHTING OF SALTCOATS

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council it was intimated that on account of the large decrease in the consumption of gas for street lighting the gas company were unable to supply the gas at the rate hitherto in force, and that for the gas consumed during the current season the rate would be the same as to ordinary consumers, subject to the same discount.

The Council agreed to accept the notice of the increase for the future, but could not agree to the rate being retrospective.

It was also decided to discontinue the lighting of street lamps when there was moonlight.

SALTCOATS CONVALESCENT HOMES

The 74th annual meeting of the Glasgow Mission Coast Homes will be held in Glasgow on Wednesday.

It is more than twenty years since ordinary income balanced expenditure, the deficiency this year being £635.

This organisation maintains two homes in Saltcoats – one for adults, the other for mothers and children up to five years of age – and notwithstanding the national emergency, both continue to function as usual.

The directors appeal to the charitable public to remember their work. The Homes have no collectors of any kind, and are therefore dependent entirely on voluntary contributions.
