WINDING-UP OF A FRIENDLY SOCIETY - SALTCOATS

After an existence of more than half-a-century, the Mariners’ Friendly Society has been dissolved.

Instituted for the purpose of providing for the maintenance of members when sick, and giving an allowance to relatives on the death of a member, the society has been the means of doing a considerable amount of good.

The members were wholly of the seafaring class.

Financially the society has always been prosperous; but latterly very few young men had joined, and through deaths membership fell down to 32.

It was therefore decided to wind-up the society, and the funds having been realised and all claims paid there remained a balance of £424 5s 11d, which has been equally divided, giving £13 5s 1d to each member.

SALTCOATS – DEATH OF CAPTAIN PETER TAYLOR

The sad intelligence has reached here of the death at sea of the master of the Glasgow ship LOCH ECK, while on a voyage from London to Sydney.

Captain Taylor was unwell when the ship sailed, but it was hoped the voyage would improve him.

He was widely known and respected in Saltcoats, of which he was a native, but latterly he resided in London.

For some years he has been in the employment of Wilson Brothers, Glasgow, the owners of the LOCH ECK.

He leaves a wife and grown-up family.
