THREE AYRSHIRE BURGHS

At a meeting of members of Saltcoats and Ardrossan Town Councils and Stevenston representatives of the local District Council – Provost Adair, Saltcoats, presiding – the deputation appointed at a previous meeting to interview the Secretary of State for Scotland on the question of local government administration of the three communities under one authority with large burgh status, reported having interviewed Mr Joseph Westwood, Under Secretary of State, and Scottish Office officials in Edinburgh on January 26 last, when the propriety of amalgamation had been placed before him and fully discussed.

In reply, Mr Westwood had indicated sympathetic appreciation of the purpose in view. He indicated the available steps open to achieve the desired result, particularly the promotion of a Provisional Order under the Private Legislation Procedure (Scotland) Act, 1936, which would involve an inquiry and the hearing of any opposition.

The meeting resolved to further pursue the matter and report upon the promotion of a Provisional Order, and in the meantime the Town Clerks of Saltcoats and Ardrossan were empowered to ascertain the views and guidance of Parliamentary agents on the whole position, the feasibility of an early promotion of such an Order, and the appropriate details necessary to be incorporated therein.

DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN

Mr DAVID ALLAN, who has just died at the residence of his daughter in Hamilton Street, Saltcoats, had reached the extraordinary age of over 100 years.

He was born in Dailly, in February, 1784, and for the greater part of his life was engaged in agricultural pursuits in various parts of Ayrshire and Wigtownshire.

He remembered, when a boy about 12 years of age, having seen the poet Burns.

For about the last 17 years he has lived at Saltcoats.

He enjoyed remarkably good health during his long life, and was able to move about up till within a few weeks of his death. For several years back he discarded spectacles, and was able to read a newspaper without such aid.

SATURDAY 22nd MARCH 1975

FUSHIONLESS SHOW BY BOTH CLUBS

SALTCOATS VICTORIA 3 DALRY THISTLE 2

The only point of interest to emerge from a meaningless game at Campbell Park on Saturday was the fact that Dalry finish the season at the bottom of the league.

From their performances it wasn't difficult to see why both teams were in contention for the wooden spoon award. They made elementary mistakes and caused all sorts of problems for themselves. There was no distinguishable pattern to either team's play.

The game opened at a fast pace but a strong wind bothered both sides.

Over-anxious play saw Dalry in all sorts of trouble while Saltcoats fared little better because they tended to hold the ball too long.

Saltcoats were marginally in front, with most of their attacks coming from the left wing or down the centre. Teenager outside-left Stuart Mauchlan was playing well on the wing. On one occasion he had a 25-yard shot which went narrowly past and later another of his shots came off the crossbar.

Gilfeather in the Saltcoats goal was first called upon in the 35th minute when he ably saved a McDonald shot.

The Dalry defence was nowhere when Paul Seenan put Saltcoats ahead in the 40th minute. A long ball found him unmarked in the centre in front of Faulds. He ran with the ball a short distance before hitting the ball off the keeper's foot and into the net.

Five minutes later a Cairns thunderbolt was saved when Faulds palmed it over the bar.

Saltcoats held on to their slender lead until ten minutes into the second half. Cairns gave away a corner and Muirhead poked the ball high into the net after a defensive mix up.

This goal rattled Saltcoats and they should have lost another a minute later when three Dalry players completely missed a perfect cross from their right winger in front of the Saltcoats goal.

Reid almost scored an own goal when he back-headed a Dalry corner but luckily Gilfeather saved the situation.

Saltcoats regained the lead in the 62nd minute when Harkins had an easy task after receiving a perfectly placed cross from Brian Lunan, who was enjoying his role as an attacking full back.

Paul Seenan scored his second and Saltcoats' third in the 78th minute with a solo run during which he travelled from midfield.

As with his first goal he met no opposition from the Dalry defence.

At this stage Saltcoats substituted B Young with teenager McLaren. But rather than consolidate their lead Saltcoats began to look ragged and Dalry scored an easy goal through McDonald five minutes from time.

Both teams obviously have players of potential. Both goalkeepers impressed and no doubt the respective managers will be hoping for better things next season.

Saltcoats : Gilfeather; Lunan, R Young; Jamieson, J Seenan, Reid; P Seenan, Cairns, B Young, Harkins and Mauchlan.

Dalry : Faulds; Watson, McAuliffe, Templeton, Hepburn, McLelland; Muirhead, Faulkner, McGill, C McDonald and Miller.
