MOTORIST SENT TO PRISON

Sentence of 60 days’ imprisonment, with disqualification of his driving licence for three years, was passed at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday on JOHN CANNING BEATTIE, (38), insurance agent, 23 Hunter Avenue, Ardrossan, who pleaded guilty to a charge of having on the Kilwinning-Kilmaurs road driven a motor car while he was under the influence of drink to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the vehicle.

He also admitted a previous conviction.

The Procurator Fiscal stated that two police officers on motor patrol duty at 9.30 on Saturday night saw a motor car stuck in the hedge on the Kilwinning-Kilmaurs road, and in the car they found accused and three other men, all of whom were very much under the influence of liquor.

Sheriff Martin Laing, in passing sentence, said that accused had been convicted of a similar offence as recently as February of last year, and he had not taken the warning.

A diving support vessel operated by the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service landed on the rocks at Ardrossan yesterday.

The RMAS IRONBRIDGE ran aground while investigating a suspicious torpedo sighted on the beach and was towed off at high tide with the assistance of Troon lifeboat. No one was hurt and a Ministry of Defence official said the IRONBRIDGE was not damaged.

The 143-ton, 24 metre vessel had a crew of five on board and a team of three disposal experts from the Clyde Submarine base at Faslane.

A spokesman from the Faslane base said the torpedo was a training torpedo.

DEATH

CRAWFORD: At Clyde View, Irvine, on the 22nd instant, Captain David Crawford, late of Clyde View, Ardrossan.

DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN AYRSHIRE SHIPMASTER

Captain David Crawford of Clyde View, Irvine, late of Clyde View, Ardrossan, died at his residence at Irvine, yesterday.

Captain Crawford was for half a century one of the best known skippers who sailed out of the Clyde. He had command of a vessel before he was 20 years of age, and at the passing of the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854 was entitled to a master’s certificate of service, but voluntarily passed the Board of Trade examination, and received a certificate of competency.

Captain Crawford had many stirring and out of the way experiences during his long career, one being a journey of 480 miles overland on ship’s business between St. Petersburg and Archangel on the White Sea.

He belonged to an old seafaring family connected with Irvine and Saltcoats, and was related to the Allans of the well-known Allan Line.

He retired a good many years ago, was a staunch Conservative, and was much esteemed in the district.
