SALTCOATS AMALGAMATION PROPOSAL

At a meeting of Ardrossan Town Council it was agreed in response to a letter from Saltcoats Town Council, to have a conference with the latter on the question of whether the joining of the two burghs would be a practical and economic measure.

BOYS’ BRIGADE REVIEW

The tenth annual review of the North Ayrshire Battalion of the Boys’ Brigade was held at Campbell Park, Saltcoats, on Saturday afternoon.

The Earl of Home, K.T., president of the B.B. inspected over 300 boys.

Mrs Welsh, wife of the officer commanding the review, presented the Simpson Drill Shield to the 1st Largs Company.

Killed in action, Gunner WILLIAM LOGAN SINCLAIR, Royal Horse Artillery – Theatre of War, France and Flanders – son of Andrew and Annie Logan Sinclair, Saltcoats; nephew of Mr and Mrs Peter Logan, 15 Auchenharvie Cottages, Stevenston.

25 MAY 1885

SALTCOATS – ADOPTION OF THE BURGH ACT

On Saturday a meeting of householders was held in the Town Hall to decide as to the adoption or rejection of the Burgh Act. There was a large attendance. Sheriff Hall, Kilmarnock, presided, and briefly explained the nature of the Act.

Mr McIsaac, of Parkend, moved that the Burgh Act be adopted. Mr William Bryden seconded. There was no counter motion, and the Sheriff declared the Burgh Act adopted.

It was agreed that the number of Commissioners should be nine, and that the election take place on 20 June.

Mr James Campbell, writer, acted as agent for the promoters of the burgh.

FISHING – THE HERRING SEASON

SALTCOATS: The fishermen who were at the herring fishing during the past week have been fairly successful, some of the boats getting five mase.

Prices during the week averaged 5s 6d per hundred.

The herring are being got off the Heads of Ayr, and the prospects of a good season’s fishing are promising.

SALTCOATS – PUBLIC PARK

A special meeting of the Burgh Commissioners was held on Monday night – Bailie Kinnier presiding.

Mr Alpine moved, and Mr Kerr seconded, that the resolution be confirmed to lease the field opposite Melbourne Terrace to be used as a pleasure ground or place of public resort.

Mr Duncan, seconded by Mr Watt, moved an amendment that the Commissioners have nothing to do with the park.

The motion was carried by a majority.
