Saltcoats St. Ninians or St. Nicholas Football Club?

Post by Penny Tray »

The Glasgow Herald of 30 August 1922, shows two Saltcoats teams in the Regional Scottish Junior Cup 1st Round Draw – Saltcoats Victoria and Saltcoats St. Ninians?

Just to complicate matters, when the match results are given in the same newspaper on 18 September 1922, the latter team is referred to as Saltcoats St. Nicholas.

Did Saltcoats have two junior clubs in the 1920s and, if so, which of the above two names is correct – Ninians or Nicholas?

RELEVANT RESULT AS GIVEN:-

Kilwinning Rangers 7-0 Saltcoats St. Nicholas

At St. Mike's we had 4 sports teams, St. Columba, St. Margaret, St. Elizabeth and St. Ninian, so I'd go with latter, Ninian of Galloway.

Yesterday, I posed this question in an email to the Scottish Junior Football Association, who, to their great credit, through Stewart Davidson, have replied in less than 24 hours to the effect the team was ST. NINIAN'S.

Apparently the club existed only between 1922 and 1923.

Stewart Davidson also pointed out that Saltcoats have had three teams with 'senior' status - Saltcoats, Saltcoats Crescent, and Saltcoats Victoria; and seven teams with junior status - Saltcoats Hillpark, Saltcoats Rosebank, Saltcoats Springvale, Saltcoats St. Ninian's, Saltcoats Victoria (1887-1897), Saltcoats Victoria (1889-1900), and Saltcoats Victoria (1911 to the present).
