Sam, I'll stick with the pub theme, I think it's the Elms.

That must be the one, George; where is it exactly ? As far as I'm aware, it's supposed to commemorate the completion of the promenade, but with all the greenery that looks to be surrounding it, it surely can't be set into the sea wall as I imagined it would have been; maybe it's been moved.

And thanks for all the interesting house names too. Must be plenty more like that around the place; if we start collecting those too it should certainly keep us busy !

Susan,

Approximately halfway between Melbourne Park and the Stanley Burn there is a semi-circular bay (for want of a better word at the moment) in the seawall and the datestone is at the base of the wall (on the shore side) there. As you say, it is slightly obscured by weeds.

So , almost certainly in its original place after all, then.

Now, while we're still thinking about house names, here's a little puzzler for you all. Where in Saltcoats is there a building with the name Kirkwood House inscribed on its wall ?

Susan,

Kirkwood House is in Hamilton Street.

I expected that one to be too difficult, PT, unless Sam knew it; but it turns out it was too easy...grrr! But I suppose if you're looking for directions, who else to ask but a helpful passing polis...

Here it is:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.63451 ... 56!6m1!1e1

I have to confess it would certainly have been too difficult for me, if I hadn't spotted it a while back on Streetview; because just as with the date on Harris' in Green Street, I had never noticed it in all my years of walking by .However, PS: you'll have to take it on trust now that that's what it says up on the wall, because I can't get a view now of it on Streetview that's readable !

Now to my mind, that is No 32 Hamilton Street; and though it's a shop now, I don't think it was one back then; the shop on the right was Goudie's shoe shop , and it was Baillie's electrical shop on the left, but this was a house; probably the one lived in by the Allens, as mentioned by Brian Moultrie in this post:

http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewt ... 324#p51324

But I daresay Sam or someone can set me right if I'm wrong on this.

The Three Towns Datestones topic ran three years ago. I thought we had all the datestones in Ardrossan but last week, I 'discovered' another one that I must have passed thousands and thousands of times without noticing.

On what building is the datestone?
