Shops in Broadway, Ardrossan

Post by George Ardrossan »

A friend told me recently that in the 1950s there were shops on the four corners of Broadway, Ardrossan. He couldn't remember their names. Can anyone help, please?

George,

Hughie, I think, has previously posted on this subject. Gracie's was one of them.

Hughie,

I see you're up and about now. George will clearly benefit from your local knowledge.

On the extreme left of the photo is where Graces shop was.
This from my recollections page :

Around 1946 wooden shops were built on each of the four corners of Broadway. Ardrossan Co-operative and Gracie's general store were built on the corners with Whitlees Crescent, the others on the corners with Castle Road for Gallagher's licensed grocers and Breckenridge's fish and chip shop. These shops closed around 1955 and re-opened in the new shopping centre as it was in Central Avenue - granny houses were then built on those four corners.

Away for my wee stroll to get the morning paper and to see if the fish are biting - camera in my pocket.

As stated, around 1946 wooden shops were built on each of the four corners of Broadway. Ardrossan. About 1955 they migrated to the new shops in Central Avenue.
The wee cross to the left of Gracie's is where I was born and raised.
1. Gracie's - general store.
2. Breckenridge's - fish and chip shop (later Morton's)
3. Gallacher's - licensed grocers.
4. Ardrossan Cooperative - groceries
