Barr Place/Kilmahew Street/Montgomerie Street
How sad was it to be reminded in this week's Herald that it's 50 years ago since they were demolishing the Barr Place/Kilmahew Streeet/Montgomerie Street houses?
We've mentioned on more than one occasion just how many Ardrossanites actually lived in this area at some stage of their life.
I was born and lived the early part of my life in Barr Place. Nobody had cameras in these days.
Surely somebody must have a photo of Barr Place to post?

I lived at 11 Montgomerie Street from birth in 1948 until 1953.

Can't recall the exact year but I believe it would have been around 1956 that they demolished houses in Kilmahew Street - between where the "Den" snooker Hall was and Barr Street. My Dad worked for the demolisher "Fisher" at that time.
Young Hughie with his bogie (home made wheelbarrow) had to cart the sawn to fit our fire, former floorboards from those houses up to whitlees Crescent on a cold Winter. I remember asking folks to "Geez a push" up the Cabin Brae at the top of Glasgow Street.

Hi Penny Tray Just read your post being a new member. I was born in 32 Barr Place above the butchers shop.

Poppy,
I moved when I was about 4 although I was often back in the street until it was demolished. I cannot remember a specific butchers shop in Barr Place, just McNamara's, the Grocer, on the corner with Kilmahew Street. There was however, White the butcher on Glasgow Street at the corner with Barr Place.
Was No. 32 nearer Glasgow Street or Montgomerie Street?

I know you would love to see an old photo of Barr Place but the nearest I can get is one taken on 17 September 2006. My understanding is that the street in which the silver car is parked was called Barr Lane before the early 1900s then Barr Place until the mid 1970s when it was subsumed into Montgomerie Street as part of the housing development.
If I ever come across a photo of old Barr Lane, I will certainly post it.

Have not seen bit in the Herald, remember Montgomerie St still being there in the 70'S can still picture it being knocked down must have in my early teen's.
Re: Barr Place/Kilmahew Street/Montgomerie Street
I lived above White the butchers on the corner, across the street on Barr place was Brogi the chip shop. I used to take a bag of hard bread for her hens and got a bag of chips for it.

That's a great photo. Do you have a date for it or know who the photographer was? Am I right in thinking that the Doctors' Surgery was beside the bus stop in the bottom centre of the photo? I wonder who the child is looking our of the window. I don't think that Health and Safety rules nowadays would allow folk to stand underneath a building being demolished.

George,
It was 'Down South' who posted this photo originally in the following link. It's Provost Joe McManus at the controls in December 1971 with other Town Council Officials observing. The house above White the butchers is being demolished. The Doctors' surgery is indeed at the bus stop and then I think it was P S Methven's Central Bar before you come to the junction with Hogarth Place.

Great to see a photo of "my" old house being demolished. What was the name of the cafe at the corner of Hogarth st and Glasgow street after that i think it was Lambert & reid the plumbers.
