Willie McCrindle ~ By Bob Auld

Willie McCrindle is leaving
For Australia's far off shore
We're all going to miss him
Of that I'm very sure
We know he is a canny lad
And easy in his ways
Right and wrong is his concern
So he watches what he says
The sorry hearts he's leaving
In time will surely heal
But let me tell you if I can
Exactly how I feel.

The birds are strangely silent
The air is filled with gloom
A few dear friends are gathered
In this brightly lit up room
To say goodbye is always sad
And no matter what you say
More than words will be needed
To brighten up this day
But throw away your sadness
Let's smile and wish him well
For Scots if they try hard enough
Could send the deil to hell.

Auld Scotia loo'es you dearly
With a heart that is sincere
And you'll still loo auld Scotia
Of that I have no fear
And tho' she made you suffer
It was only for the best
For good steel must be tempered
Ere it can stand the test
So don't think too harshly of her
But proudly you will stand
When you recall the happy days
You spent in this dear land.

You'll surely think most fondly
Of the rains that you abhor
And the sweetness of contentment
As you walked along the shore
You will lie at night and listen
But you never will be free
And you'll fall asleep heartbroken
For the seughing of the sea
And when the family's around you
It's nice to sit and yarn
And you will tell nostalgic tales
Of the sunset over Arran.

The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald
Will follow you no doubt
For news will aye be welcome
Of home and round about
You will proudly sing of Scotland
Her songs will be first choice
And happily you will smile
When you hear a native voice
Your dreams will ever echo back
Across the stormy seas
You will smile when time lets you
Recalls these memories.

Scotia is proud as well as brave
It plain for all to see
But Scotia's pride and bravery
Is part of you and me
Bravely we travel around the earth
Where Scots have often led
And no matter what we sacrifice
We hold up Scotia's head
So Willie, Ellen and your bairns
Go burnish Scotia's name
And if God wills you to return
We'll all say " Welcome Hame ".

Hi Billy,

Tom McGrattan mentioned some time ago that Willie McCrindle was a policeman in Ardrossan, and that he'd migrated to Sydney in 1966. Tom mentioned visiting him there a few years ago. I remember a policeman by that name in Ardrossan and you probably do too Billy. Hope your treatment is going well.

Hi hughie, My treatment is going very well. Nice of you to ask. Are you and your family well?. Yes the name Billy Mc Crindle was familar to me thats why I asked -to jog my memory. You have To recieve a Oscar for maintaining The threetowners site. I get great enjoyment diping in-it makes me feel part of the great Scottish community from Ayrshire. Have a G-day and keep up your great work. Bill Mckinnie your long lost friend and schoolmate. cheers

The inspiration for the East End Children was the people who were born in poverty in 1903, grew up to be the backbone of the British empire or survived the first world war. They were able to overcome their adversary but their bootlaces and create a new life for themselves by emigrating to far off shores- a tradition we continued in the 1960's. Don't know Netta. But Mary and Marion McCrindle who were at school with Bobby and I were cousins. Mary was Willie McCrindle's younger sister and they lived on Stanley Road, while Marion's family lived in the Dalry Road scheme - that was back in the late fifties :?

Willie McCrindle - that's my Dad
He is still going strong at 89. As is Ellen at 84.
He is still living in Sydney since 1966.
He still has Bob Auld poetry book
He still has a strong Scottish accent.
He was a policeman in Ardrossan, we lived in an apartment above the Police station.
He had just the one sister Betty and an older brother Eion / Ian whom passed away pre 12 years of age. They grew up in Dunure.

Welcome, Annie,

So nice to hear from you. What a lovely keep-sake for your dad and the family to have to look back on. I'm told I too have a strong Scottish accent, even though we're been here coming up on fifty-eight years - most likely because my wife is a Stevenston lassie.

Kind regards to your dad and mum.
