Mike,

I never saw Charlie Tully play but my father who was an Ayr United/Rangers supporter but went to see Celtic play every Saturday raved about him.

I'll leave you to work out the mystery of my father's strange football loyalties  .

Folks, recent events have reminded me of someone else. A certain Mr Tommy Sheridan visited Ardrossan about 5 years ago. He was giving a talk at the Stanley School and sat in the Palazzo for a fish tea before he wen't home. Don't suspect he'll be heading for many fish tea's once he starts his prison sentence mind you, although the stuff you read about you couldn't rule it out!

Like most boys in Ardrossan in the 1950s I carried a lot of luggage for holidaymakers going for boats to Isle of Man, Arran and Belfast. One day I was waiting at Winton Pier for a boat train and was lucky enough to carry bags in my bogey for David McCallum and his then wife Jill Ireland{ later to become Mrs Bronson}. They were off to Arran on a camping trip. 5 shillings was my tip for a 200 yard carry.

Us McCallum's are very generous, Geordie. Five shillings was a big tip in those days - I was probably too busy carting baggage for the Glaswegians to have noticed oor David.

My father used to tell me as a child that the Duke of Argyle dedicated the public toilets in Saltcoats because he was the greatest peer in Scotland. It was some years before I got the pun - I thought he was serious! Wee Ali

Oilers,

When you said that you had carried cases to the Arran boat for David McCallum and Jill Ireland and got a 5 bob tip I thought, "Likely story". I carried cases down there for years and never met anyone of such note, let alone get such a generous tip. Then I thought if such a visit was made some newspaper would have got wind of it.

I never doubted you for one minute!

Reported in the Herald Files " 150 years ago " this week; Sir Rowland Hill, well-known as the founder of the penny post, was staying at The Hotel , Ardrossan. Those being the days when there was only one hotel worthy of the name... which I believe was still the Tontine Inn :

More interestingly perhaps, here's a report I've found on " Ardrossan Ships "of both the then Prime Minister Mr Asquith, and the future Prime Minister, Mr Lloyd George, passing through Ardrossan separately, but on the same day, in 1913, , both on their way to visit Arran :
