The Legend of Sanny Broon - By Bob Auld

The Legend of Sanny Broon

Among the chiefs that I can name
A credit to Stinston toon,
Was a dapper chap of modest fame
His name is Sanny Broon
true to say that he was brave
But thereby hangs a tale
The moral lesson that Sanny gave
Will for years prevail
Auld Stinston folk never boast
Now don't look so amazed
There's not a man, on this coast
Ought to be more praised
A hero that's what Sanny was
Tho not by any plan
You cannot find a nobler cause
Than the dignity of man
Man's dignity will start to glow
As it matures with age
And when it does, it can bestow
A tale to history's page
But Sanny's dignity was the kind
You seldom meet today
Such real worth you cannot find
Any time or any day.

When folk get into a hubble
Maybe its a twist of fate
But if your courting trouble
You've never long to wait
Like when the canty auld folk
You seldom heard complain
Insisted Ion enough to provoke
The council in the main
Toon councillors being men apart
Very wise when elected
Consider slowly when they start
Sublime opinions are expected
Usually keeping most things in view
Whateve fate may bring

Always upholding where honours due
The best in man or thing
Streets were always clean and bright
And very hard to beat
With Irish lime of spotless white
All was kept so neat
What had caused this silly strife
Was the toons name tainted
Who was going to risk his life
The weathercock needs painted.

Around the toon they had to ask
Humbly for a volunteer
No one seemed to want the task
Surely a sign of fear
That steeple is a fearful height
Soon it was plain to all
Unless you had the second sight
No one heard the call
Rumours flew from mouth to mouth
Some were heard to curse
Appeals were sent out north and south
Matters just got worse
Strife among friends of many years
Only breeds disdain
Then to crown their senseless fear
"Holy !Sailor" came the rain
Did you ever hear a thunderstorm
Sweep around the bay
With lightning flashes that transform
Darkest night to day
Incessant rain with tireless vigour
Takes you to misery's brink
But another thing you never figure
It also makes you think.

William Wallace was just the man
Moulded for his age
Robert Bruce with his spiders -plan
Altered history's page
Since olden times I've heard this tale
Of dour Scots will
Tho days are dark we -never fail
This Promise to fulfill
The darkest hour so I've been told
The hour before the dawn
When all the world is dark and cold
And all but hope is gone
Here all ready was set a scene
The curtain about to rise
Most everybody was up and keen
To greet the dawning skies
They eagerly gathered at the Cross
Hope was in every heart
Tho most folks were at a loss
Faith must play its part
When up the street came Sanny Broon
Just as the day it dawned
Rousing cheers rang thro' the toon
Had he waved a wand.

Brightly shone the sun that morn
On those happy People
As a solitary figure lone and forlorn
Climbed that loft steeple
'Up and up they watched him climb
Till he reached the cock
Then I suppose to mark the time
It chimed nine O'clock
Sober thoughts now left a hush
Many said a Prayer
Ease the pace no need to rush
Some whispered " Have a care"
All who watched wish him luck
Hearts began to swell
You couldn't but admire his pluck
As someone tolled the bell
As eager watched the admiring crowd
The job was neatly done
It made them feel so very proud
Here was a worthy son
Scornful men you'll always find
Could have done much better
Smart Alecs are never far behind
Judging great and greater.

Perhaps you've heard of mightier things
In pictures or in plays
The thoughts of man like the pomp of kings
Works in various ways
Life's sweetest joys cannot be bought
Tho sipped from many founts
Behind each deed there is a thought
That's what really counts.

Hi Hughie :D

When you get home from The Saphire Coast, (sounds beautiful!), and after you've unpacked, and had a chance to catch your breath, I hope you wont forget about us, your Bob Auld addicts... I know I'm a pest..
Catherine
Be kind. Everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
