Arran - By Bob Auld

Post by Hughie »

Arran

Tween Knockrivoch Mounds and Sorbie Tower
Where I can view the firth
And the air is filled with mystic power
And nature leaps with mirth
By a drystane dyke where March hares play
I sat in awesome wonder
As a fresh breeze blew the mists away
And tore the clouds asunder.

Slowly and solemnly from out of the mist
Natures hazy barrier
Majestic time scar-red sunlight kissed
Came the Sleeping Warrior
Scotland's spirit in martial splendour
Portrayed in noble image
With grace and beauty, Arran's grandeur
Humbly asks your homage.

There sunlight beams on fells and glens
In varied lights and shades
And the rugged peaks of its lofty bens
Look o'er its peaceful glades
And old Goat Fell with its wrinkled brow
Serenly great and tall
His reverent mien and snow white pow
Makes you feel so small.

The days swift hours with golden wings
Tell their aged story
How strange and mysterious the twilight brings
The sunsets heavenly glory
Deep reds and golds soft glowing fire
Give a lustre grand
And leaves your heart with a deep desire
For this ethereal land.

The lingering sunset has passed away
Leaving evenings silent hush
In contentment now the dying day
Stops its headlong rush
The great and mighty must go to rest
While mountain sentinels stand
God always shows what's good and best
In this enchanted land.

Bob Auld's poem - " Arran "

Post by marydobson »

Hi Hughie
I feel rather embarrassed to admit that prior to joining The Threetowners I had not heard of Bob Auld.
I have been so impessed by all his poems that you have shared with us over the years but I would be so pleased if you could tell me a bit about him and also whether his poems are still in publication.
From a "Kilwinningite "
Regards Mary.

Hi Mary,

Ann McAlpine from Stevenston now here in Australia gave me a loan of her copy of Bob Auld's "Wee book of Poems" The book was self published by Bob Auld - real name Bob Scott. The last I heard from my niece in Stevenston was that Bob was living near the wee Post Office on Caledonian Road in Stevenston - I believe he's in his nineties now.

His son Bill, now living in England was a member of our group for a while and I sought permission through him to share his dad's poems. He wrote back saying his dad was very happy for the poems to be shared with the group. Indeed from what I understand at the time it got him writing again. I'm glad you enjoyed his poems, I'm very pleased to share them with you - I'm most definitely a fan of Bob Auld.

Hi Hughie
Thanks for your info on Bob Auld (Scott )
It is wonderful to hear that he is now in his 90 's and that your sharing of his poems with the group inspired him to start writing again.
It would be good if someone let him know how much pleasure his poems are giving us . He must be a very interesting old gentleman.
Thanks again , Hughie .
I shall certainly look forward to reading more of his poems.
Best Wishes
Mary.

I enjoyed that Hughie as I have done all of his poems. It did get me a wee bit misty though..
