I had the pleasure of having a few rounds of golf with Terry (the barber) when he retired from his shop. He was always full of wee quips and sayings. Lovely man.

His son, who was your classmate Morag, was indeed a talented musician. He actually played the organ at my wedding. Sometimes I wish he was a better marksman than organ player though. He could've just put a bullet in my back from that balcony, and saved me years of anguish. (I'd better say I'm joking here).

Terry now runs the post office in Glasgow Street, Ardrossan.

Hughie, did you know that Seamus's first barbershop was in Rowanside Terrace, directly below his parents's home. He was the first ever tenant of that shop.Just for the record, the middle two shops were combined and operated by a woman called Betty Hendry as a newsagents/confectioners etc. The one at the other end was tenanted by a Mr Bill Porter, who had a hardware/ironmongers business. More useless info. Cheers, A.B.

Hi Alex, I didn't know his first shop was in Rownside Terrace - someone mentioned West Kilbride. Seamus's uncle was Paddy Cunningham who was married to my grandmother's sister and actually raised my mother and her brother John Boyce when their parents both died in their early twenties. Seamus has a son in Sydney the last I heard, even posted here:

more from that topic.

Hughie, Amazing how 3t's triggers memories.Cissy Lewis had a barbershop on Princes St near Guthries Stationers and Allisons gents outfitters. One you won't have known about was a guy called Bobby Haswell (was married to Sandra Murdoch and died a few years ago) used to cut hair in a wooden garare behind the Central Avenue shops. I think it was in the 70's. Cheers, A.B.

This should probably be in the joke section, but I felt it was appropriate & topical for this particular thead....

Several weeks ago a guy went for a haircut.

The barber (as barbers do) asked him, "Going anywhere special?".

Fella replies, "Aye, actually, I'm off to Rome to see the new Pope's inauguration."

The barber moaned, "Ach, I did that for Benedict's inauguration, terrible time I had, the flight was delayed more than 6hrs, then when we eventually boarded and got in the air, there was awful turbulance, the hotel was dreadful, food rotten, then during the ceremony, the Pope was just a wee tiny dot about a mile away, couldn't see a thing."

So the guy leaves the shop, then a month passes and he returns to the same barber for another haircut.

The barber exclaims, "Oh it's yerself, how'd you get on in Rome?"

Fella replies, "I'd a fantastic time, my flight was on schedule, nice easy journey, the hotel was beautiful, the food sublime, and best of all, after the Mass, Pope Francis got in his Popemobile, and spent ages going all around the people, and in fact, he even stopped to speak me."

Astonished, the barber asked, "That's incredible, what did he say to you!?"

"He asked me......WTF cuts your hair?"
