More Bob Auld Poems

Post by Hughie »

Bob Auld is the pen name of local poet Bob Scott who died in 2005 at the age of 96. My brother-in-law was telling Bob's daughter that folks on our forum were interested in his poems. I was to meet Helen during my visit home but it was not to be as she was heading for a holiday and I had other commitments.

Anyway, Helen kindly passed on a copy of Bob's second book of poems for me. His son William has also been in touch and tells me he and Helen are happy if I share the poems with you. So I'll do that from time to time. here is the first :

THE KIRKYARD By Bob Auld

There's young yins wae the auld yins
In Stinston kirkyaird
Wae the hawthorn and the sycamore
On the hillside layered
There's a sweet wild flowery carpet
Offa warm tae the ee
While the doves coo sae peacefully
Frae tree tae tree
Every grassy wave sways sae gently
That covers their banes
And the tree's wide- spread branches
Oft saftens the rains

Some stanes are fresh and readable
Telling their wee story
Ithers are flaked and weather- beaten
Wae hints 0 hidden glory
Many lie wae friens and neighbours
They'd often wronged
While a few had the peace of mind
For which they'd longed
Many had blustered their way thro life
Looking bold and brave
But Some were weary and heavy laden
Frae the cradle tae the grave
