Scottish Maritime Museum Oral History Project

Post by ashep96 »

The Scottish Maritime Museum has started a project to collect oral histories from the local area as part of the Garnock Connections project. Called “Working Voices” The aim of the project is to record the experiences of people that have lived or worked in the area and have a connection to maritime or marine industry.

We are interested in how the area and its industry has changed over recent decades, particularly in Irvine, Ardeer, Saltcoats, Stevenston and Ardrossan and the surrounding area.

We hope to address a lack of recorded history in these areas by preserving the memories of those people who were a part of local industry, and whose lives and communities in turn were shaped by it. Specifically, we are looking to interview people who were employed or connected to maritime or water-based industry - shipyards, harbours, engineering firms, smithies, etc. Even if you were not yourself, if you have family and community memories of the above, we would like to hear from you.

If you have any further questions please contact Alyssa Shepherd at alyssa@scotmaritime.org.uk or phone 01294 278283. Many thanks!
