Those of you who remember Liptons in Saltcoats may find this BBC article interesting. I'm trying to remember where the shop was? Was it alongside Flemings fruit shop in Dockhead Street?

It may have slipped your mind but Lipton had a shop in Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, too.

Thanks, Sam and Penny. I know those shops existed in both Saltcoats and Ardrossan, but remembering the locations is a problem - I've been gone almost 55 years. I do know when we were first married there was a shop alongside Flemings fruit shop in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats - probably the first supermarket in the three towns, I'm thinking perhaps it was Wilkies? Anyway, it was a magnet for young modern go-getters like oor Betty and I back then.

Was Liptons next to Woolies and became a Chemist,or I away from Woolies

Wilkies was halfway along Hamilton St.
It was about 30 years ahead of its time with the range of world food and drink.

My recollection is that if you walked down Green Street towards Dockhead Street it was just to the left on the far side of the road, nearer Stark's the stationers than Woolworths.

I think the place you're thinking of, Hughie, is Templeton's; it was just a few doors along from Fleming's, and it was indeed the first proper supermarket in the Three Towns. Wilkie's ( the original one ) was about halfway along Dockhead Street and was a traditional grocer's.

Was there not a Massey's Supermarket in Dockhead as well in the early 60s?

There was indeed a Massey's in Dockhead Street ( next to Wilkie's ); also a Cooper's ( opposite Wilkie's ). Both these, and Lipton's, went over to self-service around the early 1960s, but Templeton's was the first supermarket to be purpose-built and was altogether a superior article.

I think i remember -William Low, When you went through the door you where on top of the 3/4 check -outs A medium size rectangle shaped shop.

Very interesting read that about Liptons Hughie. When i go abroad and ask for tea i get a cup of hot water and a Yellow Liptons tea-bag.
