Saltcoats founder of London's Cycle Response Unit

Post by Hughie »

I knew my Saltcoats cousin's boy was a top BMX rider, but this makes me very proud.

Tom Lynch – The BMX champion who transformed the emergency services.
Former BMX world superstar knew he could reach patients faster than ambulances in heavy traffic,
so he decided to set up the modern day Ambulance Cycle Response Unit.

What a wonderful concept and a great service to the people of London that your cousin's boy came up with. In a city that can get overcrowded with both people and cars - time is so precious especially if you become sick. Maybe you should encourage this out here, Hughie. Definitely something to be proud of.
One question though. Do they only use there bell or have a louder horn to tell others they are coming in a hurry?

According to http://www.londonambulance.nhs.uk/calli ... onder.aspx the cycle responder bikes have blue lights and a siren.

A tremendous achievement Hughie, it's just a pity Saltcoats didn't get a mention in what was a very good article.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Hi Hughie,
Is Tom the son of Billy or his older brother? I believe he has also been awarded a B.E.M. in recognition of his work.

No, John. Tom is the son of Thomas who was the youngest in the Lynch family and probably four or five years younger than Billy - they all grew up in Miller Road.

When my granny lived in Townhead Road in the 50's, in front of the park on the opposite side of Miller Road , we were told to keep away from the boys from Miller Road, known to be always in trouble with the Police. To know that Tom came from Miller Road and has acheived what he has is really, really impressive.

Thanks for that information Hughie, I didn't know there was one younger than Billy. Billy and I went through Primary School together at Kyleshill.

Hi John. There was Catherine and Mary Lynch who were twins, then Robert, Billy and Thomas. Learned a few things when playing with my Miller Road relatives all those years ago. :)

The link in the first post in this topic went missing. So searching I found a more comprehensive link. See top of page.

This is from the Herald posted by Mark Lynn on FB. We were on a visit home at the time and I remember Tom's dad (also Tom) telling me about the donation of the bike to replace the stolen one.
