I didn't have a clue what topic of the month was about, that's the only reason I questioned it.

No, Michael, just from reading Hughie's post.michaelm wrote:I just wish the majority of the members on here had been informed of that beforehand. Perhaps you should have sent me a PM about your concerns, Michael. This is not about gaining brownie points or boasting about achievements. It's about finding awards, perhaps with inscriptions that we can discuss. Not exactly sure what this topic is about Hughie.
This format has been used successfully in the past, you might have noticed in our archives, See this example. I did announce I was bringing back topic of the month but I did err in not giving enough warning and pointing to the above example. Now perhaps we can see if it is to be a success.

ICI Long Service Awards 1965 ~ By Bob AuldHughie wrote: - Recall presentation events staged in the workplace or elsewhere.
March 5th, 1965
Long service awards is an Ardeer occasion
Now this annual event has become a tradition
When workers and friends in Nobel's employ
Give time honoured workers a night they enjoy
Many were meeting old friends at long last
Laughing and joking at tales from the past
We honour each other for none can? excel
The trusty old pals we all know so well
So in happy contentment we sat down to dine
With the salt of the earth, your friends and mine
Then all in their turn received an award
On each was bestowed a well earned reward.
Not without sadness mid the mirth and the joy
I saw quite a few I've known since a boy
Those childhood friends from barefoot days
I'm still their debtor in a great many ways
They taught me to reason whenever in doubt
For many did praise, and many did shout
My misty old eyes they began to cloud
God gave them the grace, but weren't they proud
Just proud: you wouldn't say bold
For all knew the name they had to uphold
As I picture the scene, I like to recall
When each in his turn, answered his call.
A moments pause to brace themselves up
For many of them had enjoyed their cup
Then soldier featured concealing their pride
For friends they often try to chide
A carefree wave, to the cheers and cries
Happy pleasure sparkling in their eyes
As down they strode trying to look casual
Head held erect, but that's not unusual
Up to the table with scarce any fluster
The camera flash just added some lustre
A few words of thanks then the presentation
Then back to their friends to share their elation.
Blithe of spirit we now face tomorrow
Hoping the blessing of God will follow
We inherit some wisdom, a gift from time
With honest fame, from this misty old clime
Autumn tints we watch them slowly blend.
As thro the years we steadily wend,
The rainbow's allure, has been chased away
With happy daydreams, that once held sway.
Clear as day each night must follow
Just as sure as time will mellow
The whims and ways of various man
Must in their turn, follow the Masters Plan.

MIchael,
I'm another 'Mega Heid Poster' and I'm only reading Hughie's post as it appears and as I understand it!
I helped a wee man, a tiny wee man, who lived in Muir Drive, Irvine, with a family predicament circa 1970, and he 'gifted' me his three 'first world war medals', all bearing his military details - PRIVATE ROBERT MILLER, 7564, ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS.
My understanding is that there will be no one to lay claim to these medals, but if there is someone out there, I'd be happy to pass them on for your continued safe keeping! I'm now about the age Mr. Miller would be when he gave them to me for safe keeping.

Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Ah, I get it now and that's a great wee poem by Bob Auld.
Likewise, an interesting account from PT, although I really haven't a clue what Mega Heid posters have to do with it here?

Re: Topic of the Month - July 2016
My big sister Anne Nock was one of the Duxes of Ardrossan Academy in 1965. The tradition of giving a medal was still kept up ( see here ), but unfortunately I haven't got hers.
But I do have this bookplate from her prize book; similar bookplates appeared in all the school prizes. You'll see the office misspelled her name as Ann, which displeased her greatly !
It was traditional for there to be a boy and a girl dux, but at this time the Academy had prizes earmarked for a Science and an Arts Dux ( the Science one as you can see sponsored by Shell ) , which made for complications if the candidates didn't match up ; they tended to get round this by having joint duxes in one category or other. So Anne was both joint science dux with one of the boys, and joint girl dux with the Arts Dux.
The presentation was on the annual school prize day held in the Assembly Hall; the parents were invited to sit on the platform with the other guests, and my mother went to the lengths of buying a hat, a rare event on our household; it was a rather fetching pink affair, as I remember. Also present was this proud little sister, having won a modest Primary prize herself, and applauding harder than ever when Anne went up to collect her prize.
And by the start of next year her name had duly been written up in gold lettering on the dux boards that lined the corridor outside the Hall; I always felt in the presence of history when looking at those, with the names stretching right back to the earliest days of the school, growing ever more faded as they did so.

My brother, Robert Park, was senior Dux (1964) of Ardrossan Academy. He shared the senior Dux medal with another lad who got it for science. My brother got it for languages.

Talking about Dux Medalists, here's Kyleshill School's Dux Medallists board
Unfortunately the only image we have of Eglinton's Dux board is poor quality and we don't know what became of it.
