PUN BRAE

Post by Penny Tray »

Little Plum.

Since you're up and about just now, where in Stevenston was the Pun Brae?

P.T. it's a subject B.DARG and myself have discussed in the past without conclusion, it needs more in depth investigation. Brae speaks for it's self but the "Pun" I have no idea. It could, as you suggest , relate to weight. There was a mill in that area, and one of the mill stones was on display quite close to the brae.

I think your right Little Plum.
The mill stone, I think is located very close to the public toilet where the burn runs under the High Road.

Attended the local quack at the health centre today. As it was a nice morning, and with time to spare, I thought I would check out the mill stones and the Pun Brae. There are 4 mill stones next to the public toilets, it's obvious there has been restoration work carried out on them, the centres looked original.
Now here's the mystery, what I thought was the Pun Brae is actually sign posted as " Punn Wrae" , could this be a error on the council's part or a glitch on our memory. :)

I've lived in Stevenston nearly all my life, and I can't ever remember any mention of a pun brae.

Hi, was the Pun not a corruption of pound.I 've heard it said it was a pound for stray animals, pigs cows, goats ,etc.and a fee had to be paid to get your animal back. Sam.

I see a reference to to in AYRSHIRE ROOTS and a suggestion that it's origin might have been PAN WRAE which was a CHIEF'S FORT?

Doesn't sound like a corruption of Gaelic, maybe Pictish? :smt102

Penny Tray posted information about the Vikings traders in Stevenston, could it be related to those times, similar to the origines of other names in Scotland. :?:
