Local judo early 1970s

Post by down south »

A few pictures of local judo participants in the early to mid-seventies.

This first one shows three girls from the Auchenharvie Judo Club who took part in the British Ladies Trials at Crystal Palace in February 1975; Barbara Millar, Maureen Curran and Violet Dickie.

Maureen Curran gained enough points in the competition there to win promotion to black belt status, the first woman in Ayrshire to achieve that.

This second one dates from June 1973 and shows the Ayrshire Girls' judo team who took part in the annual junior girls' judo championships at Meadowbank, an event which attracted 125 competitors.

Again Violet Dickie features, second from the left in the second-front row; and at Meadowbank she won a silver medal in the under 55kg class, just missing out on gold by a split decision. ( It's also possible that's Maureen Curran in the centre of the front row, but I'm less sure about that . )

This final picture show the 82 competitors at the Ayrshire Junior Judo championships held in July 1972. There were no local winners, but I hope there may nevertheless have been some local participants.
