Grain ship Harry R Jones aground at the Inches in 1961. The buildings in the background are the Can Factory.

Hi Ian,

That's most likely the same ship you see in the first post in this topic. There is another image of it from a different angle in the pictorial book "Old Ardrossan" stating:
In February 1961 the cargo ship Harry R Jones, en route from Canada to Troon Shipbreakers Yard, snapped her tow line and drifted onto the Inches.

I also remember walking there to see it. Someone told me it was originally a Liberty ship, anyone confirm that?

With the ship coming from Canada I always took it to be a ship constructed for use on the great lakes as a bulk carrier. Many such great lakes ships had the superstructure right forward while the cabins and engineering was aft, just like the Harry R Jones.
