It wood seem that at some point, Hugh Calvert, born 1900 at Ardrossan, died 1977 at Ardrossan, was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) trying to find out when ? and what for ?.....any help appreciated...

Hugh Calvert, Docker, Ardrossan, is listed in the Supplement to the LONDON GAZETTE, 3 January 1945, indicating that he was in the New Year Honours list. The fact that he is listed as a docker would suggest his award was in relation to work at the harbour.

Oooh that's interesting, thank you....we know that he was in the Royal Navy in his early years, and wondered if it was something to do with that, but I understand that from 1922 onwards the BEM was given to civilians, for various reasons......

He gets a mention in the Glasgow Herald of 3 January 1945 - referred to after a Glasgow police officer - "Mr. Hugh Calvert, employed as a docker at Ardrossan Harbour for the past 29 years has received a similar award."
