What now for Afghan women?

Post by Jim McCreadie »

The Afghanistan situation would be a joke were it not so pitiful. I feel deeply for all who paid the ultimate sacrifice, those who suffered physical and mental wounds, lost mates, innocent civilians, etc. The democracies should never have gotten involved to the extent they did.
Safely ensconced abroad, Ashraf Ghani blames the democracies, when in reality, blame lies with his own military, the vast majority of which would not stand and fight for their own country! Despite many billions of dollars in aid, both civil and military and years of training to stand on their own, they cut and run leaving behind an arsenal of vehicles, aircraft, weapons, ammunition and other combat-related kit to the Taliban.
I well recall images of a women buried in a pit up to her neck then stoned to death, one young woman whose ears and nose were hacked off, and a deaf woman, shot in the head because she didn't hear a Taliban behind her tell her to move along. All Afghan females will be forced back to the Dark Ages; banned from working, no education after the age of 10 years, housebound being able to leave only while wearing a burqa and with a male chaperone, and the constant threat of flogging or execution for breaches of "moral" laws. The Qur'an does not forbid music, it does not forbid women employment or education or state they must wear the burqa; it simply states women should dress modestly. These are prohibitions imposed by men living in the feudal age! The Taliban's presently-touted tolerance "within Sharia law" will prove a nonsense.

Will there be substantial positive changes under the "new" Taliban? Check the skies for flying pigs!

This disaster would not have happened if Biden hadn't brought back the American troops. It was a tradgedy waiting to happen.

We should credit the New Taliban for finally bringing their 12th-century values right up to the 15th.

glensheena: The U.S. withdrawal was not down solely to Biden who was honouring an agreement made by his predecessor. It was started by the Trump administration during February 2020, when his administration negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban which freed 5,000 imprisoned Taliban and set 1 May 2021 for the final withdrawal. However, the agreement excluded the Afghan government. The Trump administration kept the agreement and reduced U.S. troops from about 13,000 to 2,500, even though the Taliban continued to attack Afghan government forces. Biden, following his inauguration, delayed the 1st May 2021 deadline and replaced it with 31 August 2021.

Here's the excellent Rachel Maddow highlighting Trump boasting about how he agreed that withdrawal process so that nobody could then stop it - and sarcastically predicting the subsequent government collapse - and he's now berating Biden for following that agreed process,to loud cheers from his following of "deplorables".

Thanks to 'Shale'- The Americans no longer have to police the Persian Gulf. The States will soon be exporting more oil than Saudi Arabia.
