I spoke to Ellen on the phone today and she sends her love to everyone. "Sorry" is still the predominant word in any conversation you have with her - "Sorry she had the misfortune to break a bone in her back; sorry Robert, her husband, has to do so much for her as a consequence; sorry she is no longer able to work her computer; sorry she can't post the BBC's photographs of the week; etc., etc., etc. Still a delight to speak to though. A lovely person.

She was 80 today.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.
