And thou grim Pow’r, by life abhorr’d,
While Life a pleasure can afford,
Oh! Hear a wretch’s pray’r!
No more I shrink appall’d, afraid;
I court, I beg thy friendly aid,
To close this scene of care.

Ev’n winter bleak has charms to me,
When winds rave thro the naked tree;
Or frosts on hills of Ochiltree
Are hoary gray,
Or blinding drifts wild-furious flee,
Dark’ning the day!

Ay free, aff han’, your story tell,
When wi’ a bosom cronie;
But still keep something to yoursel’
Ye scarcely tell to onie:
Conceal yoursel’ as weel’s ye can
Frae critical dissection:
But keek thro’ ev’ry other man,
Wi’ sharpen’d sly inspection.

Fair play to the Man :lol:

Ref- Kevin McKenna. The Guardian.
His great love in Auld Reekie was for Clarinda and this apparently wasn't consummated, how they know I don't know? But this would suggests that when he was there he kept his breeks on.

My stem was fair, my bud was green.
My blossom sweet did blow;
The dew fell fresh, the sun rose mild,
And made my branches grow.

All you who follow wealth and power with unremitting ardour,
The more in this you look for bliss, you leave your view the farther,
Had you the wealthy Potosi boasts, or nations to adore you,
A cheerful honest-hearted clown I will prefer before you.

Well, yet again oor Robin astounds me - no doubt you had a quick look PT to find out where or what Potosi is.

From Wikipedia ...

Potosí is a city and the capital of the department of Potosí in Bolivia. It is one of the highest cities in the world at a nominal 4,090 metres (13,420 ft).[2] For centuries, it was the location of the Spanish colonial mint.

I've been waiting since the beginning to see 'A man's a man' passing this review.
- Absolutely amazed that nobody has yet referred to - for me - Burns' masterpiece, piece-de-resistance and greatest tour de force.

I did Meg but a long, long time ago. And no doubt you've now read the whole poem? I first heard it at a Burns Supper in "nineteen-oatcake" and remember arriving home about two o'clock in the morning and settling down to read it three or four times before staggering to bed.
