5siamese7 wrote: Sat Dec 02, 2017 2:58 pm Birds are such great opportunists . My neighbour for years put out loads of bird food and then stopped and the birds stopped coming. To-day I saw a great tit which is unusual and then I saw the bird food hanging in next door's garden. On the subject of starlings ( which are in decline) to watch them go to roost is spectacular. How they weave in and out like a cloud of locusts never touching each other. This spectacle can be seen at the big shed at Ardrossan harbour.
Not in my garden, there can be 100+ on my grass at a time, and it's not a large piece of grass . Also I recently found out the term for a group of starlings is a murmaration (spelling).

I have a cockatiel pet but growing up we always seemed to have budgies. First time my very young wee sis saw one preening itself, she was a bit dumbfounded, wide eyed she exclaimed 'Look, it' pickin it's chicken!'

I often don't understand my birds. Food goes out each day, yet sometimes there is a big crowd of pigeons and sometimes just 2 or 3. Somebody in the toon must be giving them a bit more than me.

Well Viv I do believe that there are people who would do that sort of thing. However because the weather has been so mild there are plenty of places the birds can get food. Spoilt for choice

I was out n about today, and came back to find 'Red' still waiting on food as the dark was coming in.

Persistence paid off because he got several slices of bread to himself. :-)

That confirms that red roosts nearby because pigeons have poor night sight Great sight in daylight but did you know they also get snow blind and are easy prey to the shooter.
