PAPER POKE = paper bag. Mentioned the term "paper poke" to an English lady we once knew - she hadn't a clue so had to rephrase. She was from about Kent but her husband was from Ayr.

Thinking the other day about words we used back then. Wonder if the following is still used at home?

Example: When my dad wanted a second cup of tea, he'd say sign out (meaning rinse) my cup first - loose tea leafs in those day.

My late husband annoyed me once too much and I said, Scottish accent..'Och, away and chase yerself!' He, very stiff shouldered replied, 'No you go and chase your own self!' Thought I'd die laughing!

Morag, that's still quite a popular saying.

And it reminds me of a Polish chap I knew while working in Highland Meats in Saltcoats. He taught me a wee bit of Polish and I returned the favour by familiarising him with some Scot's word's and phrases. It always had us all chuckling when he'd shout "Away you n' chase yersel" in an eastern european accent whenever somebody was annoying him at work.

Another word we used was "Press", for cupboard.
e.g. Where's the jam? It's in the kitchen press.

I had a 90 year old visitor over the festive period whose excuse for being late was that her tongue had taigled (delayed) her; who would have helped in the kitchen if she’d brought her peenie (apron); and who would have accepted an invitation to stay the night if she’d brought her goonie (nightdress) and didn’t have to sprauchle (struggle) upstairs.
