Reading ahead for the 'THIS DAY IN HISTORY TOPIC,' I was distracted by the following extract under the heading 'THE PLAGUE IN SCOTLAND, in the 5 May 1900 edition of the Glasgow Herald': -

"...…….The earliest extant Act of Parliament anent it was passed in the reign of James II. It bears no evidence whatever that the plague was an unusual visitor, but speaks of it as a thing of almost ordinary occurrence. It ordains that those who are stricken shall "remain in their own houses" if they have sufficient means to maintain themselves and their household. If they refuse to remain, they are to be put forth of the town, and to be compelled to live in a fixed place, lest they should wander about the country and "fyl" it. Poor people are to be provided for, and the prelates are directed to make processions twice a week in the diocese in order to "staunch" it...…….
