Re: Scottish Politics

We Scots can be awful proud of our health- and social-care history. If my memory serves me correct, another feather in our cap is the Erskine Hospital for handicapped (war-wounded) ex-servicemen. In England, their establishments were operated and financed by the Royal BRITISH Legion. Erskine was a f...

Re: The use of a word

Hi Gnaff,

Yes, that was the more usual use of 'tim.'

Re: The use of a word

Yes,
I remember my grandparents' generation using that when I was a boy.
Another one I remember being used was 'tim' for empty.
Never ever used them, nor did my parents' generation.

Re: The use of a word

Hi both.

Hoist with my own petard. :)
I suppose, now that I've used the word myself, I can't ask Stivis any more why he used it.
I was wondering whether he was getting funny in his old-age. //funny

Re: The use of a word

Stivis, hi.
You have raised a good point. Define 'use.'
As far as I can remember, I have never actually said the word 'necromancer.'
BUT, I have read and heard it often enough in books and in radio/TV plays etc.
So, have I used the word or not?

I've been waiting patiently for somebody to point out that this is the Pictures of Scotland thread and not the vaccination thread. :hi:

Really enjoyed that; it took me back.
Just one nit-picking thing:-
Back in the days, neighbours talked TO each other.

Sorry, JD. :(

Can't stand Americanisms sneaking into our language.

Re: Amanda Gorman - What a performance

Sorry, PT, I disagree completely. To my mind, there was no likeness to any poetry that I recognised. There was absolutely no rhyme, or rhythm. It was simply a prose political speech suitable to the occasion. Not a fan of modern poetry, as you will have noticed. :( A good number of years ago (in type...

Re: The ... What are you doing or thinking right now - Topic

Here in Holland, this is a well-known trick.
When the death announcement is published in the newspaper, they don't give the home address with the time and date of the funeral, but state 'care of the Funeral Undertaker's address.'

I think that the Pole, Smih, will be family of Big Vincent, the mentally handicapped man who worked with Stevenston Burough as a bin-man.
