Re: World War I Gallery

When I was growing up there was a low wall on Canal Street at the bottom of Guthrie Brae opposite Mr Smets wee shop. Everyday, when the weather was reasonable, four of five older men would sit on this low wall for hours just talking away. This was in the nineteen-fifties. When I see all the young me...

Re: World War I Gallery

Trooper James Cairns would have been my great-uncle, a brother to my grand-father, Thomas Cairns. A great uncle that I never even knew that I had.

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History

Just noticing a coincidence on the page.
On my wife's father's side of the family, both his grandfather and geat-grandfather worked at the mineral well in the Holm Plantation.

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History

Thanks PT, I have a copy of the same report from one of the local Paisley newspapers.
When I read the article, it came into my mind that the family must have taken great comfort from the fact that the tragic accident caused no delays to the ongoing traffic on the railway lines.

Re: Saltcoats - On This Day In History

James King was my wife's (Cathy Adam) grandfather, I tried to get his fatal accident enquiry from the Paisley and Johnstone libraries but it has long since been lost. The train company took no blame for the accident and my mother-in-law's family got no compensation.

Saltcoats connection

re The recent appointment of Ken McCallum to head of MI5.
His step-father was David McCallum who came from Argyle Road in Saltcoats.
David sadly died a few years back and is not a relation of my McCallums.
