Re: Bobby Lennox kicks off Scouts & Guides match, 1971

Now I'm the one who's given offence; for which I'm very sorry. :( Morag seemed to think Peter's remark was a bit much, and though of course I knew that it was a slip of the keys on her part, being personally invoked like that had me feeling I ought to be saying something myself to back her up...

Winton Rovers team, 1974

Here's another Winton Rovers team picture . But since it's from a very different era to Meekan's I thought it best to post it separately . It shows the team in September 1974, complete with names. Winton Rovers team 1974.jpg Many of the same players, along with others associated with the club, will ...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Thanks for all those fascinating extra details about the bowling alley and Norman McClain, John. Sounds like the place was really buzzing with entertainments of all kinds in the sixties. And at the start of the seventies, another element entered the mix: Pavilion amusements.jpg I think I may have se...

Re: Electricity for Ardrossan, Saltcoats and District, 1910

I don't know about Ardrossan, but electric lighting finally arrived in Saltcoats in the early 1920s; presumably the original scheme was delayed by Ardrossan's reluctance and the outbreak of the War. I've managed to find several Herald Files extracts that give a flavour of how events progressed: Janu...

Re: Bobby Lennox kicks off Scouts & Guides match, 1971

Wondered what on earth was going on there for a minute.I'd be grateful if you'd keep such dubious remarks out of my topics, Peter; spoils a good story.

But thank you very much indeed for yours, PT.

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

You've obviously been reading the same articles as I have, PT. Apparently there was also a coffee-and-hamburger bar with Arran views, to add to that American feel. As any fan of the Flintstones knows, going bowling was reaching a peak of popularity in the USA back in the sixties, and it's gratifying...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Looks as though you could well be right, PT; today's Apollo , on the same site, is certainly standing foursquare in the same view on Streetview today. So we're narrowing it down pretty well, because on this showing they hadn't even started building it at that point. Unless of course the flood had wa...

Re: Ardrossan Academy

My goodness Linda, I didn't know that Miss McKelvie even had such a thing as a belt; you must all have really annoyed her... I was just a couple of years behind you,and in my experience of Academy life the belting of girls was vanishingly rare. I'm not completely confident about what happened in the...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Thanks, all of you. I must confess that as a child of the sixties , when they'd really gone except for the odd one-off at the cinemas, I've been quite surprised to discover that Saltcoats had such a tradition of summer shows with visiting entertainers, and that the Pavilion was specially built for p...

Re: What do you call someone from...?

Yes, you're all quite right about the Segton connection with Kilwinning. Apparently , as our Kilwinning section on threetowners.com describes, Segdoune was the name of the original settlement in the area, in the days back before St Winning ; and it was indeed supposed to have been in the Corsehill d...

Bobby Lennox kicks off Scouts & Guides match, 1971

With the Olympics uppermost in our minds at present, now seems like a good moment to show some pictures connected with sporting matters locally. And after recent mentions of that illustrious footballing son of Saltcoats Bobby Lennox, what better to start with than this old Herald picture which shows ...
