Another golden wedding now, of William McKenzie and his wife Margaret, nee MacMillan, in July 1972.

More than 40 friends and relatives of Mr and Mrs William McKenzie attended the couple's golden wedding celebrations in the Eglinton Hotel, Ardrossan last Friday...but none of them realised that the Ardrossan couple almost didn't get married 50 years ago.

On the day of their marriage in 1922, Mr and Mrs McKenzie were involved in a humorous mix-up. The minister, the Rev Alexander McDonald of Stevenston High Kirk, had forgotten to put the wedding date down in his diary or to notify the beadle.

So when Mr and Mrs McKenzie arrived at the church nothing had been prepared. However, full of apologies, Mr McDonald quickly prepared himself for the ceremony and after a few uneasy moments the wedding went off without a hitch...well, almost.

Because just as Mrs McKenzie was about to say " I do , " she noticed an earwig on her dress and stepped back in fear. After that minor upset the couple were finally married, and as Mrs McKenzie said this week, they can now reflect on the humorous aspect of their wedding day.

The couple, who live at 7 Coalhill Place, have two sons, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild and all attended the celebrations last Friday.

One of their sons made the trip from Canada with his family to be with his parents on their big day, and Mrs McKenzie's sister and her husband also came over from Canada. Other friends from Belfast attended the anniversary celebrations.

After a meal in the Ardrossan hotel, Mr and Mrs McKenzie took their guests for a night out to the theatre.

Mrs McKenzie, whose maiden name was Margaret MacMillan, was born in Stevenston and she and Mr McKenzie lived there after their marriage for 29 years. In 1951 they moved to Ardrossan.

For over 46 years Mr McKenzie, a native of Saltcoats, worked at Ardeer Factory, Stevenston.
